Title of Internship: Bike Share Planning and Operations Internship

Salary: Unpaid

Description: Houston Bike Share (HBS) is the nonprofit operator of the Houston BCycle bike sharing program. We manage a network of 34 self-service bike stations and 256 bikes. HBS has received a $4MM grant that will fund the addition of 71 stations and more than 600 bikes to the network over the next 12 months. This expansion is already underway and by the end of 2017, we will be one of the largest BCycle programs in the US and anticipate that our operations will be forced to adapt to increased infrastructure and ridership. It is an exciting time for HBS!

HBS is currently looking for interns to join our team for the Summer of 2017. Interns will work out of our office in the East End, spending 50% of their time in the office and 50% percent in the field with operations staff or visiting potential future station locations.

Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for supporting staff in streamlining field and shop operations to deliver the best bike sharing experience to our customers as efficiently as possible. This includes managing inventory, adjusting staffing in light of weather or event related variables, managing inventory, and refining preventative maintenance schedules and process.

Interns will also assist the executive director in planning the location of future stations. This process requires surveying current usage patterns, anticipating future development, and ensuring access to transit and high comfort bike facilities. Interns will also assist the executive director with preparing a formal framework for determining what factors contribute to the relative success of individual stations. This document will guide all future station siting efforts.

With the installation of 15-25 stations over the course of the summer, interns will also be called upon to assist in coordinating with installation contractors and city staff to ensure that all applicable requirements are met prior to install.

Finally, HBS always encourages our interns to come up with projects that excite them or questions they are interested in answering. In this way, the internship is limited only by the imagination and ambition of the applicant.

Qualifications:

  • Specific Experience: Excel, data analysis, urban planning.
  • Professional Skills: ability to synthesize large amounts of data and customer feedback to make decisions regarding station placement, operational efficiency, and internal processes.

How to Apply:  Interested applicants should send a resume to: cstern@houstonbikeshare.org
