FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Keep Houston Rolling to Provide Bicycles for Houstonians with Flooded Cars

HOUSTON - During Hurricane Harvey, flooding destroyed an estimated one million vehicles across Houston, leaving many Houstonians without reliable transportation. In many cases, the owners cannot afford to purchase a new car. Houston Bike Share has partnered with BikeHouston, Freewheels Houston and Rice Bikes to launch the “Keep Houston Rolling” program. For the remainder of 2017, we will be accepting donations of new and used bikes and distributing them to community members in need. All bikes donations will be accepted, regardless of condition. Donations can be made at Houston Bike Share’s office at 407 Velasco Street. In addition to distributing donated bikes, personal bikes that were damaged in the floods are also eligible for repair.

With commitments from two bike-manufacturing companies, as well as an upcoming Keep Houston Rolling Bike Drive at Interfaith Ministries (3303 Main St.) on September 9th from 9am to 12pm, Houston Bike Share anticipates having several hundred bikes to distribute by mid September. “Our goal is to distribute at least 500 free bikes to Houstonians in need by the end of September and over 1,000 bikes by October 31st.” says Houston Bike Share’s Executive Director, Carter Stern. An application for a free bike is available at https://houston.bcycle.com/about/keep-houston-rolling or you can apply in-person at 407 Velasco Street, Houston, TX 77006, Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.

Please consider donating hybrid bikes, mountain bikes, BMX bikes, unused helmets, bike lights or bike locks at one of our upcoming Bike Drives or to our office at 407 Velasco Street from 8am to 5pm Monday - Friday. Monetary donations are also accepted at https://www.gofundme.com/keep-houston-rolling.
